- CleenSaver 1.3 ReadMe
-
- CleenSaver is a very simple screensaver utility. It differs from most
- screensavers in that it is 'system clean', hence the name. A system clean
- utility is one that does not contain any INIT code. That is to say, it does
- not install itself into the system. It runs in its own partition, just like
- any other program. Cleensaver has an advantage over most other system clean
- screensavers, however. It's astoundingly easy to use. Not only that, but it's
- small. It takes up only 5K of your disk space, and will run in a 16K
- application partition (Half that of the last version!). It is fully Apple Event
- aware, and can react to open and quit events.
-
- CleenSaver should run on any Macintosh, and should function with any screen,
- from a Mac Plus 9" black-and-white, to the most expensive of 24" color monitors.
- It should also run well on any Powerbook. I have not, however, had a chance
- to test it on a very wide range of monitors. CleenSaver should run under any
- version of the Mac System Software from 6.0.2 on, but requires at least
- multifinder, and preferably System 7.x for best results. CleenSaver is now
- fully compatible with System 7.1, a major improvement over the last version. To
- the best of my knowledge, CleenSaver has no problem with 32-bit addressing or
- virtual memory, although I have not been able to test it as much as I would like
- to in either of these environments.
-
- There are two ways you can install CleenSaver. The first, and simplest, is to
- drop either CleenSaver or an alias thereof into the Startup Items folder
- located in your System Folder. When your computer boots up, it will also load
- CleenSaver into a separate application partition. To start work, click in the
- background, and the Finder will come up normally. The other way to install it
- is to simply put it in a convenient place, and double-click it whenever you
- first need to use it.
-
- When CleenSaver first runs, it creates a small button labelled 'SLEEP' in the
- lower left hand corner of the screen. To darken your screen, click on this
- button. To resume work, click anywhere, or press any key, and then click in
- the background to bring your work back up. If for some reason you want to turn
- off CleenSaver, hit the 'q' key while the screen is dark. Cleensaver is Apple
- Event aware, however, and will turn itself off when you shut down, unless you
- are running System 6. In that case, you should quit CleenSaver before shutting
- down.
-
- CleenSaver is free but NOT in the public domain. If you use it, I would really
- appreciate it if you would send me a note at either of the addresses printed
- below, and tell me what system you are using it on, and any problems you may
- have with it. I, James Wise, retain all rights to CleenSaver, except that you
- may distribute it freely, as long as no monetary transaction is involved in the
- exchange, and as long as this ReadMe file is included. If you would like to
- provide Cleensaver on any basis except free of charge, you may contact me at the
- address printed below to work out details. CleenSaver is provided AS IS. I
- have tested it to the best of my ability, but can take no responsibility for
- any damage it may cause to your system, or loss of data which might result from
- its use.
-
- Version History:
-
- 1.3 Major rewrite. CleenSaver is now fully compatible with Systems 6 and 7.1,
- and runs in half the memory of the previous version. All known bugs have been
- cleared up, including a lurking nasty that was causing some people to experience
- freezes, and several minor cosmetic improvements have been made.
-
- 1.1 Fixed two key bugs, one was causing intermittent crashes with out of
- memory errors on some systems, and one causing the sleep button to appear in
- the wrong place on most machines.
-
- 1.0/1.0b Initial release.
-
- Future Plans: I hope to do away with the necessity to click in the background
- after exiting CleenSaver.
